Zhanna brought two silver rings to meet her husband, whom she hadn\u2019t seen in three years: hers and his. She put both on her fingers. She took the rings with her when she left Oleshky with her two daughters, shortly after the Russians blew up the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant. Their father, her husband Mykhailo, stayed behind. At first, he said, \u201cThis is my home. Where am I supposed to go, and why?\u201d Later, he was afraid of filtration. He looked after their property and pets: chickens, nutria, parrots, cats and dogs. Many of them were crushed by concrete slabs after the Russian military blew up the Kakhovka dam and a massive flood swept through their city. Now that their city is not only flooded but also bombed and suffering from hunger, Mykhailo seems to have finally made up his mind. In Oleshky, he had survived on his own supplies and vegetables from his garden. He installed solar panels to have electricity and a phone connection. The family agreed that he would bring fermented tomatoes \u2014 the special Kherson kind \u2014 and they would buy some salo. Zhanna and their daughters, older Liza and younger Daria, have been waiting for him since early morning. Will he really come? Did he get on the evacuation bus? They tried to persuade him, but they cannot be sure until they see him with their own eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iryna Mohylna is waiting for her godfather, Mykola. Two days ago, she messaged him with the place and time to meet for the evacuation. \u201cOkay,\u201d he replied, but he hasn\u2019t answered her subsequent messages. Perhaps his phone ran out of battery. So Iryna can only hope that one of the bus passengers will be someone dear to her. Iryna herself left Oleshky in April 2022, when it was still possible to travel through Ukrainian-controlled territory. From everything her godfather has told her, she can say this: in Oleshky, you don\u2019t live anymore; you just survive. The roads are littered with mines, and no one can remember how many months it has been since food was last delivered. \u201cHe doesn\u2019t tell me everything,\u201d Iryna says. \u201cBut I can feel the horror in his silence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valerii Honcharov is waiting for his brother. He left earlier, at the beginning of the full-scale war, taking only a bag of documents with him. Russian soldiers moved into their home. The day before the humanitarian mission, Valerii\u2019s 19-year-old daughter, Yelyzaveta, urged not only her uncle but also several other relatives, friends and acquaintances to leave. So today she is expecting a whole crowd. Yelyzaveta organizes fundraisers for the military, moderates a chat group for 2,500 Oleshky residents and helps people living under occupation. She asked acquaintances to bring food to her loved ones and searched for soldiers who could drop food parcels from drones. Yelyzaveta wears a pendant featuring a trident and a wheat ear, a gift from friends a few months before the full-scale war began. Her uncle doesn\u2019t know he will be welcomed by a big family. If he has only just boarded the bus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, everyone here is waiting for someone. Everyone, for someone. Volunteers are waiting with tea and borscht. Representatives of humanitarian organizations have jackets, blankets and warm sweaters. Doctors have first-aid kits and wheelchairs for those who need them. Animal rescue volunteers have pet food and carriers. They wait through the few hours it takes for the evacuees from Oleshky to fly out of Anapa, Russia, transfer to buses in Belarus and finally arrive here, in a border village in Chernihiv Oblast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dogs are the first to announce their arrival. They whimper from inside the closed truck as soon as it pulls up. The doors open, and their whining is joined by the meowing of cats. A raccoon and a parrot have also come from Oleshky. The animals are transferred from their cages, and volunteers pour out food for them. One woman will later tell me that she brought not only her own German shepherd but also stray animals from her street \u2014 those she had managed to get her hands on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, the people arrive. Wrapped in Ukrainian flags, they wave to the crowd from behind the bus windows. Daria, the 16-year-old daughter of Mykhailo Palii, is the first to rush toward the bus. Dad is here! Wrapped in Ukrainian flags, the family embraces \u2014 for the first time in three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s it, my dears,\u201d Mykhailo says. \u201cI\u2019m home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They cry and laugh. Daria raises the flag: she wants to show her father the tattoo on her arm, which she got while they were apart. Mykhailo kisses his daughter\u2019s tattoo. They wrap themselves in flags as if to hide from the cameras and all the attention. Zhanna hasn\u2019t yet told her husband that she bought a new dress especially for their reunion. Or that perhaps they should get new wedding rings \u2014 gold ones this time. He might buy them, or she might. It doesn\u2019t matter. Zhanna and Mykhailo have spent 20 years together. She makes a wish: that they will celebrate their next milestone anniversary, their silver wedding, at home. In June 2023, Zhanna hugged her house, clinging to its door as the floodwaters approached. Their property stands on the street closest to the Dnipro River. The water stopped just 50 centimeters from their yard. Zhanna said goodbye to her home once more in 2024, when she left and traveled first through occupied Ukrainian cities, then through Russian ones, to reach Kyiv. Today, she has reunited with the dearest person who was still there. Why shouldn\u2019t she believe in one more miracle?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mykola, Iryna Mohylna\u2019s godfather, tells her in person what he had not dared to say over the phone: that the Russians have made life in Oleshky unbearable. Dead bodies lie in the streets. People in Oleshky are dying in their homes, with no one to bury them. Mykola planted a garden, and it saved him from starvation. He is glad to be here. \u201cI breathed freely \u2014 for the first time in so many years.\u201d A retired neighbor whose house has now been completely destroyed has moved into Mykola\u2019s abandoned, relatively intact home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valerii Honcharov has reunited with his brother, and Yelyzaveta with her uncle. They warm up in tents and have borscht for lunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFinally, we can breathe,\u201d Yelyzaveta says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liudmyla Nazarenko \u2014 the stranger who waved to me from the bus window so enthusiastically, as if we had known each other all our lives \u2014 throws herself into my arms as soon as she steps off the bus and bursts into tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wanted freedom, and now all I need is a coffee,\u201d she says once she catches her breath. Liudmyla \u2014 I can tell immediately that she is a teacher \u2014 arrived with her husband, her older son and her 92-year-old father. He is one of the oldest residents of Oleshky evacuated on this mission. The youngest child is just one year old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI feel as though I\u2019ve just come out of anesthesia and still can\u2019t recover,\u201d says a woman who learned about the upcoming humanitarian mission from a broadcast on Ukrainian radio. In Oleshky, she listened to it secretly as soon as evening fell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI lived under occupation like a mouse beneath the floor,\u201d another woman adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s both joyful and bitter,\u201d a man says. He feeds his cat, which is so hungry it can hardly get enough to eat.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll of Ukraine came to welcome me,\u201d says a man who has no relatives here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An hour after the reunion, the evacuees from Oleshky board buses or ambulances. Some will go home with relatives or friends, while others need to go straight to the hospital. As they set off, dusk falls. Residents of the surrounding villages stand along the road, flashing their phone lights, waving flags and laying flowers in their path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of October 31, 2026, the large-scale humanitarian operation to rescue people from occupied Oleshky in Kherson Oblast has come to an end. Hundreds of Ukrainians who had been trapped in the besieged city amid a humanitarian crisis are now in Ukrainian-controlled territory. Russia has caused a catastrophe in the city: in recent months, Oleshky residents have been living on the brink of starvation. Electricity and gas have been unavailable since the first months of the occupation in 2022. Water supplies were cut off after Russian forces blew up the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant. Those evacuated from Oleshky ask us not to forget: people are still there.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
