From the Creators

This issue marked my first encounter with a print magazine, the inaugural English edition for Reporters, and a departure from the traditional reportage format—all achieved with zero budget.

To be honest, it wasn’t easy. As someone who raises funds for the military, it felt awkward to ask a bunch of people for donations to publish a magazine. But the entire team believed passionately in this idea and its importance, so I took a leap of faith.

As I engaged with our initial patrons, I realized there was no need for shame. After all, I was rallying support for printing of a historical document—a unique product that brings together Ukrainian documentarians and reflective author column

Olha Omelianchuk,
Reporters Special Issue Editor

The photo collection curated by our colleague, photo editor Danylo Pavlov, is truly remarkable—it’s powerful, astonishing, and deeply integral. Some of the images are so impactful that they render you speechless.

One particular photograph that has left a lasting impression on me is the image of the burning field. Despite the absence of an identifiable enemy in the photo, the image speaks volumes about the harsh realities of conflict. The wheat fields in the Kharkiv Oblast, engulfed in flames by Russian shelling, stand as a haunting reminder of how war devastates the land and the lives tied to it, leaving behind scars that linger far beyond the fire’s ashes.

Bohdana Neborak,
Chief Interview Editor

While working on this magazine, I found myself reflecting on the stark contrast between us and our adversaries. At the heart of it all lies a difference in values—those fundamental principles that define who we are.

But what exactly are our values? A photograph captured by our colleague provides a poignant answer: it shows firefighters rescuing a kitten from the rubble—a powerful symbol of a worldview where life prevails over destruction. This image underscores what truly sets us apart: our unwavering commitment to liberty, democracy, and the sanctity of life. In a war where the stakes couldn’t be higher, victory belongs to those who fight not for death and devastation, but for life and hope.

Anastasiia Struk,
Design Lead

In documenting these events, our goal is to provide the world with undeniable proof of the realities unfolding on the ground. Photography is more than just evidence—it’s a keeper of memories, preserving moments that, while often painful, are deeply significant. Each image has the power to transport you back in time, evoking the raw emotions tied to those moments.

One photograph, in particular, embodies both fear and tenderness. It left me with a crushing sense of bitterness, as though my heart tightened in my chest. It shows a little girl holding her guinea pig, her cherished pet, while behind her stand the ruins of homes destroyed by Russian strikes.

Danylo Pavlov,
Photo Editor

Understanding the resilience of Ukrainians amidst the current conflict requires a recognition of the historical backdrop and the deep wounds it has left behind. Throughout history, Ukrainians have made numerous attempts to break free from Russian influence, and each failed attempt, not only led to the loss of statehood but also unleashed waves of violence.

The photograph capturing the liberation of a village, with a portrait of Taras Shevchenko in the background, represents the culmination of more than three centuries of perseverance. The liberty envisioned by our national poet hundreds of years ago, is made possible through the resilience of the Armed Forces of Ukraine nowadays.

Daryna Tymkiv,
Global Community Manager

This issue of the magazine serves as a platform to showcase the work of Ukrainian photographers who have been tirelessly documenting a tragedy that should never have unfolded in the heart of Europe. Yet, here we are, in the 11th year of this war. Russia’s actions have wrought destruction and inflicted deep trauma on generations of Ukrainians, leaving scars that will resonate through our society for years to come.

The true tragedy, however, is felt most acutely by the children—the ones lying awake at night, tormented by the wail of air raid sirens and nightmares; the ones forced to flee from rocket attacks, seeking refuge far from the places they once called home; the ones growing up without parents, their lives irreversibly changed by loss and separation.

Taras Prokopyshyn,

This issue holds a deeply personal significance, capturing the indomitable spirit of Ukrainians. The image of a kitchen cabinet amidst the ravages of war serves as a powerful symbol of our resilience. For me, personally, it resonates deeply. With my parents residing close to Borodyanka and weathering the storms of battle during the siege of Kyiv, that period was particularly challenging. Yet, amidst the chaos, this photo stands as a testament to the Ukrainian spirit. Despite the devastation wrought upon our homes, we endure, we persevere—much like the sturdy kitchen cabinet adorned with a rooster, a symbol of hope amidst adversity.

Viktoria Lavrynenko,
Head of Production

It’s destined to find a permanent spot in my family library, a poignant reminder for generations to come. I’ll eagerly share it with my foreign friends, and one day, my grandchildren will leaf through its pages, learning about the sacrifices that shaped their heritage.

The photo that resonates with me the most captures a poignant moment: a mother tenderly braiding her daughter’s hair before the training session of the local Volunteer Territorial Community Formation in the Kyiv Oblast. It embodies a sense of duty, underscores enduring traditions, and highlights the essence of responsibility—qualities that transcend individual identities.
